a| La Fargue was a French poet, notary, and orangist pamphletist. Being a fleeing Huguenot he settled in the Netherlands and married Charlotte Constantia van Nieuwland (1703 -1785).

a| The treatise of Barriere was declared in 1709 in The Hague and 1715 in Antwerp, whereby the Dutch Republic v. Germany and England was granted the right to erect a barrier in the Eastern Netherlands against France by laying siege to a number of towns (barrier towns). In 1781 the barrier towns were evacuated by the Republic on request of Emperor Joseph II. The only time that the barrier towns had to serve against France, during the War of the Austrian Succession, they turned out to be completely useless because the fortifications were neglected and the occupation was insufficient (1744).
