a| 'De Byencorf der H. Roomsche Kercke' was in its time one of the most famous written combats against the Roman Catholic Church. The author does this in the form of a defense: he pretends to give an explanation of a work of a French Catholic known at that time, who calls on the Calvinists to rejoin the Mother Church. Marnix pretends to offer a positive addition to that booklet, but under that mask the Calvinist is speaking. Holy indignation alternates with coarse mockery that the contemporary could enjoy, just as he also accepted the verbose nature of the booklet without any objection. Supporters and opponents have devoured this booklet, as the reprints and the many writings about it show.
