a| "L'Abbé de l'Épée" features Charles-Michel de l'Épée (1712-1789), inventor of sign language and creator of what has now become the National Institute for Young Deaf People in France. A great figure and benefactor of humanity, the abbot was celebrated as such from the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century, with Bouilly's play playing a large part in this cult, which was maintained mainly by the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb.
