a| Nicolas Boileau is best known as a poet, writer, critic and for his leading role in a major literary dispute between two opposing currents in the late 17th century, which became known as a struggle between the classics and the moderns. He did much to reform the prevailing form of French poetry, in the same way that Blaise Pascal did to reform the prose. He was greatly influenced by Horace.
