a| Pieter Burman the Elder (Utrecht 1668 - Leiden 1741) a Dutch classical scholar, was appointed Extraordinary Professor of Eloquence and Poetry in Utrecht in 1696. In 1715 he held the office of Professor of History, Eloquence and Greek Languages in Leiden. He was highly esteemed by the poets of his time but he had also made many enemies because of his sharp pen. For example, he never missed an opportunity to denounce the clergy. In 1711, he took up arms against the theater-hostile Utrecht clergy. His "Speech for the Comedy," which first appeared in Latin, resulted in 13 pamphlets.
