a| Handel completed "Joseph" in the summer of 1743. It is composed to an English language libretto by the Reverend James Miller, based on Apostolo Zeno's Italian language libretto for Giuseppe, an oratorio by Antonio Caldara. The libretto is based on the Biblical story of Joseph found in Genesis chapters 38–45. It received its premiere performance on 2 March 1744 at the Covent Garden Theatre.
