a| 2 verses from "Partant pour la Syrie ou Le Beau Dunois," traditionally dated 1807, a classic example of the songs or romances evoking the spirit of the Middle Ages and its troubadours, a genre that flourished during the Napoleontic First Empire. The melody was initially attributed to Hortense de Beauharnais, Napoleon's daughter-in-law. Then the musicologist Arthur Pougin named a certain Louis-François-Philippe Drouet (1792-1855), flutist at the court of Louis King of Holland, as the true author of the melody. The lyrics were written by Count Alexandre de Laborde (1774-1842), an archaeologist.
