a| Jan Everaerts (Secundus) was a New Latin poet of Dutch nationality. He wrote elegies, epigrams, odes, epistles, epithalimia, itineraries, and other prose. His most famous work was Liber Basiorum (Book of Kisses) which is among the works in this volume (p.79-92) The compiler, Peter Schrijver (Scriverius) was was a Dutch antiquarian, philologist, writer and scholar on the history of Holland and Belgium.

a| Secundus was a prolific writer, and in his short life he produced several books of elegies on his lovers Julia and Neaera, epigrams, odes, verse epistles and epithalamia, as well as some prose writings (epistles and itineraria).His most famous work, though, was the Liber Basiorum (Book of Kisses, first complete edition 1541), a short collection consisting of nineteen poems in various metres, in which the poet explores the theme of the kiss in relation to his Spanish lover, Neaera.

a| Scriverius, was a profilic publisher of humanist literature. He collected manuscripts of Neolatine authors from his own time and from the time of early humanism. Based on these, he produced a number of editions, including the Latin poetry of Janus Secundus (first published in 1619).
