a| Gisbertus Voetius (1589-1676), a rector and professor at the University of Utrecht, was the most influential voice of the Nadere Rerformatie, a Pietist group that objected against all things wordly in Dutch society. He was a notorious opponent of René Descartes when the latter resided in Utrecht.
