a| Gisbertus Voetius (1589-1676), a rector and professor at the University of Utrecht, was the most influential voice of the Nadere Reformatie, a Pietist group that objected against all things wordly in Dutch society. He was a notorious opponent of René Descartes when the latter resided in Utrecht, a fierce adherent of dualism and of the strict separation of body and mind, against the Cartesian alumnus Regius.
