a| In 1835, Immerzeel began to work on his magnum opus, a reference work on the lives and works of Dutch and Flemish painters, sculptors, engravers and master builders from 1500 to 1850. He incorporated existing biographies, but also used unpublished manuscripts and documents. Of the works, he listed the place where they were kept, and often the price, based on data from auctions and inventories. When he died in 1841, the work was completed by two sons, Charles Henri (1803-1878) and Christiaan (1808-1886), a painter. The three volumes were published in 1842 and 1843.
