a| In the eighth chapter, on singing, Grimarest expresses his annoyance with all those modal listeners who criticize the poets and musicians of the opera: "Laissez donc aux gens du métier, ou à ceux dont le goût est reconnu solide & délicat, à décider d'un ouvrage. Ce n'est point en récriminant que je parle ; je n'ai jamais travaillé pour le Théâtre ; mais je ne puis voir, sans un peu d'indignation, l'injustice que l'on fait souvent aux Poëtes, & aux Musiciens ; ils sont tous les jours à la merci du caprice, & des ignorans, & malheureusement, c'est le parti le plus nombreux, dont je ressentirai peut-être les coups à mon tour." (p. 195)

a| Grimarest extols the art of Lully, Destouches en de la Barre in making the length of rhythms correspond with the character of expression, (pp. 203-206), yet he also acknowledges Lully's faults (pp. 206-207). He dislikes the Italianate use of "roulades" on certain terms, as words alone cannot express a thought according to him (pp. 210-211).

a| Although Grimarest did not work for the theater himself, theatrical plays used to be recited at his home, as the The Hague 1760 edition states: "C'étoit pour le [l'art de bien prononcer] cultiver que Mr. de Grimarest qui avoit du talent pour la déclamation, récitoit souvent chez lui des Pièces de Theatre avec des amis choisis & qui n'aimoient pas moins que lui cette agréable ocupation. ... c'est de cette pratique instructive que Mr. de Grimarest a tiré des preceptes decidés" (pp. x-xi)
