a| Throughout his life, Elmenhorst he was able to combine his theological profession with his love of theatre, and culturally open-minded Hamburg offered him this opportunity. In 1660 he was appointed Diaconus (2nd pastor) of St. Catherine's Church, which gave him the opportunity to test his inclination for music in his own home. His song sermons, hymns and musical plays were set to music by Hamburg composers such as Georg Böhm, Johann Philipp Förtsch, Johann Wolfgang Franck, Petrus Laurentius Wockenfuß and Johann Theile. Elmenhorst is regarded as one of the co-founders of the oldest bourgeois German opera house, the famous Hamburg Opera at Gänsemarkt, for which he wrote and translated several libretti (e.g. Polyeucte by Pierre Coerneille, music by Förtsch) alongside other poets such as Friedrich Christian Bressand, Barthold Feind, Johann Ulrich von König and Christian Heinrich Postel. Through this activity, as a theologian, he became directly involved in the first Hamburg Theatre Controversy, which led him to publish his important defensive treatise Dramatologia in 1688.
