a| Vossius was a Dutch Protestant theologian, linguist, historian and humanist (1577-1649). He was amongst the first scholars to treat both Christian theological dogma and non-Christian religion from a scientific-historical, instead of a theological point of view. He was regarded as a homo universalis because he involved himself in many fields of science.
