a| Starter (Jan Jansz.), a poet from Friesland who flourished in the first half of the seventeenth century, published several works of poetry, but mostly of frolicsome and lascivious content; some stage work by him is also available. He died young in battle. As he had to deal with ecclesiastical opposition, his plays were banned. Also his publishing company went down. In 1625 he became the historian of Count Ernst van Mansfelt. He also took on the task of 'courantier', which meant collecting war news and passing it on. It is in this war, the Thirty Years' War, that he dies while marching in Mansfelt's campaign in Hungary. Many of his poems became the subject of other artworks such as plays or paintings. He is best known for his poem about the "Mennonite Sister".

a| Ex Libris Christian Ernst Graf zu Stolberg (Illustrated armorial bookplate)Christian Ernst Graf zu Stolberg (1691-1771).The golden age of the Stolberg library was during the reign of Christian Ernst (1710-1771). He not only greatly increased its holdings and opened it to the public, but was also its librarian, commissioning the distinctive Stolberg bookplate and personally inscribing the publication date on the spine of each volume bound in white vellum. In 1746 Christian Ernst issued an edict making the collection—by then about 10,000 volumes—a public library.
