a| In 1621-1622 Huygens wrote the poem "Κερκυραία μάστιξ, Satyra,'t Costelijk mal" ('Costly folly'), a satire on the aping of foreign fashions by the young people of The Hague. The two words in Greek translate literally as 'Corcyraean scourge'. This was an extremely elaborate scourge described in detail by the Greek geographer & philosopher Strabo (Geography, VII, Fragments, 4). Strabo concludes his discussion of the phrase by stating that it was a proverbial term. Huygens uses it to refer to the overly elaborate or superfluous ornament and clothing worn by the young people of The Hague.
