The genealogy begins with Rev. Heintich Nolthen (†1580). His son Rev. Joergen Nolthenius (†1590) settled in the Netherlands. In 1804, Willem Hendrik Nolthenius (1776-1827) married Julie Tutein (1783-1865); their children, living in 1856, took the name Tutein Nolthenius. Musical family members were: Hugo Nolthenius (1848-1929), conductor and classicist, Elsa Nolthenius (1884-1964), pianist, Hugo Nolthenius (1892-1979), cellist and classical scholar, Hélène Nolthenius (1920-2000), musicologist and writer.
