a| The translation of the psalms go back to John Calvin (1509-1564). In 1562 a collection of psalms (known as the Genevan Psalms) was published, suitable to be sung during the service. Calvin had started rhyming in Strasbourg himself. Back in Geneva, he handed this work over to Clément Marot and Beza, while he asked Guillaume Franc, Louis Bourgeois and Maitre Pierre to compose the music. Calvin's zeal in making a collection of psalms arose from his wish to use the Bible alone, also for the hymn. Later editions were edited by members of the 'Compagnie des pasteurs de l'église protestante de Genève'.
