a| This set of three anonymous methods could have been commissioned by Claude Bachelu, a bookseller from Lyon who was worried on several occasions for counterfeiting or for having distributed banned books. Having published numerous works of spirituality and theology, Bachelu brought out in his name a collection of Cantus diversi (1689). Like Parisian colleagues such as La Caille, he doubled this publication with a theoretical counterpart, thus the 'Trois methodes'. Modeled from the easy method designed for the Parisian seminary of Saint-Nicolas du Chardonnet, they then benefited from a long editorial existence since they are found at the end of several other books imitating that of Bachelu, and this until the middle of the 18th century. The 'Three methods' are (partly) included with a new title page and new compositions in the Cantus diversi by Claude Moulu (Lyon, 1700) and by Gaspard Henault (Toulouse, 1745) or, without title page, in the Cantus diversi ex Graduali Romano by Pierre Valfray (Lyon, 1724) and this edition by Joseph Douladure (Toulouse, 1745).
