a| The writer places the story around the end of the Twelve Year's Truce. Maurits Lijnslager is the son of a merchant from Amsterdam. At the age of eighteen, he must take up his father's office in Livorno. which means he would leave Rotterdam, where he met Maria van Vliet. One of her brothers becomes his traveling companion, although he soon succumbs to the miserable journey. Maurits continues his travels in the company of the Flemish painter Antonie van Dijk and meets the musician Manichetti in Florence. Together they meet the famous Galileo Galilei and Maurits becomes an eyewitness to the capture of this sage. The story also elaborates on his time in Genoa, where he meets Rubens. He declines the offer to settle there for good and travels back to the Netherlands via Switzerland. He returns from his journey with the then still youthful Milton.
