a| P.J. Beronicius is probably a mystification; the real author might be Dirk Buysero Dutch librettist, playwright and poet (1644-1708)?

a| Beronicius (fl. 1650) was a mysterious character, possibly a monk who had eloped, a talented eccentric, who in the 17th century wandered through France, England and the Netherlands and spent a long time in Zeeland. He earned his living by sweeping chimneys, was often inebriated and drowned in a street gutter in such a state. Apart from modern languages, he mastered ancient languages with great virtuosity, spoke and wrote poetry in Latin and Greek. The most prominent of his poems is this burlesque comic-heroic poem in Latin hexameters about the raid of the Walchers in Middelburg in 1672.
