a| Barley's work was (according to the book) the first English solo music for plucked instruments to appear in print. Earlier lute books had been published in England, but not with English music. The book is a thorough study of this opus, with commentary, "tabliture" and a transcription into staff notation (bass & treble clefs). The original apparently contained many mistakes, which have here been corrected, both in the original and on the staff: "Every alteration of the original material, however, is indicated in the critical apparatus at the end of this volume."
