a| This volume is the first to systematically investigate the reception of a work by Athanasius Kircher. Until now, some well-known negative voices had led to the assumption that his prototypical compilatory approach and universal scientific superstructure had also become obsolete with the early modern period. However, the overviews and representative case studies collected here can demonstrate traces of reception at least for his music encyclopaedia Musurgia universalis into the 18th and even 19th centuries, reaching from Ireland to St. Petersburg. The following guiding questions run through the individual texts: Is the Musurgia received as a whole or only in individual components? What does it stand for? In which contexts is it referred to? Can confessionally different ways of reading and using it be identified? Has Kircher's strong emphasis on the connection between theory and compositional practice been implemented? In this way, the book also invites us to think anew about the boundary between early modernity and modernity.
