a| In the year of Bach's 200th death anniversary, the Utrecht students (and especially those of the U.S.K.O. anyway, under animated opposition from the traditional student music societies) organised the largest Bach commemoration in the world, under the artistic direction of Hans Brandts Buys and with USKO president Carel Birnie (1926-1995), the later founder and director of the Nederlands Danstheater, as the organising brain. The Utrecht Bach commemoration included more than 40 concerts (click here for the Annual Programme), many given by the USKO itself (see the USKO agenda here), others by Brandts Buys, chamber music ensembles to which he belonged, Utrecht organists and a guest ensemble from Remscheid (Federal Republic of Germany). A number of concerts were also given in Zeist, Breda and Goes. This large-scale commemoration was made known by several editions of a Bach newspaper that was distributed door-to-door in Utrecht, with a circulation of 70,000.

a| Although it was originally planned to publish this newspaper only once (November 1949), after a very favourable reception of the first issue, it was decided to issue a total of seven numbers. Four of these were distributed in Utrecht, one in Zeeland, one in Breda and one in Zeist. After the Bach year, the Bach newspaper was converted into a U.S.K.O newspaper. The first 100 pages of the newspaper were then bundled in a volume, in a brown linen binding with gold stamping
