a| In 1834, Mr Henri Scheibler, a music lover and manufacturer in Crefeld (Prussia), devised a new procedure for rigorously determining the absolute number of vibrations of a given sound. This new procedure enabled him to establish an exact tonometer and a new method for scoring and tuning instruments with a degree of accuracy previously unknown to him.
