g| No more than any other major event in public life, a world exhibition can do without the contribution of music, this essentially social and cosmopolitan art form. But it is difficult to determine, in a judicious way, the place it should occupy in world fairs. The task requires both taste and skill. At the Ghent exhibition, a committee was set up to organise the musical events. It was made up of Eug. Bayens, president; Victor Carpentier and Henry de Smet de Naeyer, vice-presidents; Dorsan van Reysschoot, general secretary and director of the musical festivals; Marcel de Groo, treasurer; Paul Vanden Haute and Joseph Maere, assistant secretaries; Alb. Baertsoen, Gust. Colardin, de Clercq, Henri de Cock, Ed. de Vynck and Wilfrid Siffer, members. Mr Maurice de Smet de Naeyer, General Manager, was the Executive Committee's delegate to the committee; in addition, a number of affable commissioners were appointed to provide concert and reception services for the societies. A regular brass band was set up and placed under the expert direction of Mr Th. Coutelier; the daily concerts were very popular, thanks to well-chosen programmes and meticulous execution.
