a| While travelling with the Prince of Wittgenstein, Reinhard visited the Acoustic Cabinet of F. Kaufmann & Sohn in Dresden. It was there that he first played a Druckwind harmonium, which became a key experience for him.Reinhard did not see the Druckwindharmonium as a cheap organ surrogate, but as a keyboard instrument capable of performing expressive orchestral music. He paid particular attention to the technical training required to play the harmonium, which he regarded as essentially different from playing the piano or organ. ‘Harmonium Pope’ Reinhard distanced himself from the later widespread suction wind harmonium. In 1877, Berlin publisher Carl Simon published his Harmonium School op. 16, of which more than 40,000 copies had been printed by the time of Reinhard's death. This school was still available from the Leipzig publisher Edition Peters at least until 1989. Reinhard performed publicly in harmonium concerts and also taught harmonium playing. One of his pupils was Paula Simon-Herlitz, who later became the daughter-in-law of his publisher. Due to the decline of the harmonium during the 20th century, Reinhard was almost completely forgotten. More recently, there have been signs of renewed interest in Reinhard's work.
