a| From 1842 until his death in 1876, Heije was a member of the main board of the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Toonkunst. It was mainly to his credit that the Collectio operum musicorum Batavorum saeculorum (a large collection of early vocal music) was published by the Society in 1844-1859. In 1864, he founded the Choral Society, which was changed to a general choral society after only a few months. In 1868, he founded the Society for Dutch Music History.
