Wanneer je in de gerenommeerde Index catalogus van de National Library of Medicine op zoek gaat naar oude werken over het fenomeen "depressie" dan komt er maar één titel te voorschijn "Depression: what it is and how to cure it", een uitgebreide tekst van A. E. Bridger, late physhician to the hospital for diseases of the chest. Een uitgave van de Londense uitgever John Hogg uit 1892. Dit werk begint met een uitgebreid voorwoord waarin we uitleg krijgen bij "... Bridger and his popular-scientific treatise on depressions". En vervolgens worden we getrakteerd op een kopie van het origineel. Bridger staat bijvoorbeeld stil bij de vraag "What is depression?" en heeft het bijvoorbeeld over "Misuse of the brain as a factor in depression". Afsluiten doet hij met niet minder dan dertig cases. Zo begint case 16 bijvoorbeeld met de volgende tekst: "Early in March of 1891 I was consulted by a medical man with the following symptoms. For a week he had felt strangely depressed, and twice during that time, when in stations on the Underground Railway, had suddenly felt an almost irresistible impulse to throw himself in front of an advancing locomotive. He had never previously experienced such sensations, came of a healthy stock, and was a man of strictly regular and even methodical habits."
