The present work, commissioned by TICCIH, is one in a series of comparative thematic studies which propose criteria by which the material evidence of different industrial sectors can be assessed. These are pertinent for the World Heritage list as well as for national and regional inventories. A historical summary identifies when and where the important advances in the water industry took place so as to help recognize both the outstanding as well as the most representative surviving sites-- the unique but also the ubiquitous-- and to locate potentially significant ones. A selection of case studies is included to aid the comparative analysis of historic properties
