The Artists' Television Workshop was inititated to provide artists with an opportunity to create original programming in a broadcast environment. Four artists were selected from among leading Canadian video artists for this pilot project involving the Media Arts and Electronic and Film Media programs of the Banff Centre. The workshop took place between September 11 and December 15, 1989, with major financial support from Telefilm Canada and the Banff Television Festival and resulted in the production of four videotapes: Daniel Dion, Great Divide/Grande Barrière 1990 (15:17 min); Ardele Lister, Behold the Promised Land 1991 (21:27 min); Robert Morin, Preliminary Notes for a Western 1990 (22:05 min); Jan Peacock, Whitewash 1990 (14:22 min).
