Le Sicilien ou l'Amour peintre is a one-act comedy-ballet, with music by Lully. This play, a precursor of the style known as opéra-comique, combines song, dance and comedy. Jean Baptiste Lully is said to have produced here his "best musical score [... thanks to] a happy balance between alternating musical interludes, the spoken word, the sung word and the vocal ensembles ".The first performance of this work was given on 5 January 1667 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.When the play was revived at La Comédie Française on 9 June 1679, Marc-Antoine Charpentier composed the music , and on 10 March 1780, the music was composed by Antoine Dauvergne.Camille Saint-Saëns composed the incidental music for the re-creation on 30 May 1892 at the Théatre français in Paris. - Permalink:
