Lodewijk Meyer was a Dutch physician, classical scholar, translator, lexicographer, and playwright. He was a radical intellectual and one of the more prominent members of the circle around the philosopher Benedictus de Spinoza.
The frontispiece depicts an oblong room, containing five pulpits arranged along the walls, with a speaker on each. The front of each lectern shows which subject is being taught. From back to front they are: Language Studies, Philosophy, Medicine, Law, Theology (Taalgeleerdheidt, Wysgeerte, Geneeskonst, Rechtsgeleerdheidt, Godsgeleerdheidt). These are branches of science from which terms with their translations are included in the Vocabulary. The frieze along the hall walls reads: 'Bastaardt Woor. Verouderde Woor. Konst Woorden', referring to the three volumes of the dictionary. Two flying putti carry an open book marked ‘Woorden Schat’ (Words Treasure/Vocabulary). The room is filled with bearded men with hats and long coats, two female figures looking at each other are in the foreground
