the publisher, John Bell (1745-1831), was an important printer and typographer whose bookshop, 'British Library', was located in the Strand and who pioneered the regular s (instead of the long s) in English printing

Dedicated to "His grace of the Duke of Queensbury and Dover, Marquis of Beverly &c." (Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry, 2nd Duke of Dover (1698-1778) Scottish nobleman, extensive landowner, Privy Counsellor and Vice Admiral of Scotland)
Based on the historical figure of Elizabeth "Jane" Shore (née Lambert) (c. 1445 – c. 1527) one of the many mistresses of King Edward IV of England. She became the best-known to history through being later accused of conspiracy by the future King Richard III, and compelled to do public penance.
