Nota:
Satirical speech, in which the Leiden professor Burman summons the students not to tire themselves with Latin and Greek, "those studies, which falsely carry the name of civilizing, and which are so harmful to piety, good name, scholarship and the coffers".
Pieter Burman the Elder (Utrecht 1668 - Leiden 1741) a Dutch classical scholar, was appointed Extraordinary Professor of Eloquence and Poetry in Utrecht in 1696. In 1715 he held the office of Professor of History, Eloquence and Greek Languages in Leiden. He was highly esteemed by the poets of his time but he had also made many enemies because of his sharp pen.
