- Carlo Gervasoni was an Italian organist, violinist and composer, as well as a harpsichordist, philosopher and music theorist who is best known for his treatises 'La scuola della musica' (1800; see 08B22) and 'Nuova teoria di musica ricavata dall'odierna pratica' (1812; see 04G21), the second of which helped lay the foundations for sonata form theory.
The letters are dated between 7 September 1800 and 20 February 1804. They are addressed to Gian Francesco Fortunati, a composer of opera buffe, Francesco Canetti, the kapellmeister of the Duomo Nuovo of Brescia, and Anselmo Marsand, a Benedictine monk. The last letter offers an interesting autobiography of the author. - Permalink:
