Hieronymus Sweerts was an art dealer, print publisher, bookseller, poet and author who also published under the pseudonym Jeroen Jeroense or under Hippolytus de Vrye. He wrote a large number of (often witty or farcical) poems (together some 900 pages) and a number of other works. Some individual poems appeared in print during his lifetime. After his death, his son Cornelis Sweerts collected and published his poems under the title Alle de gedichten (1697). Sweerts moved in the literary circle that opposed the strict-classicist views of the Amsterdam art society Nil Volentibus Arduum.
