Nota:
Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was a philologist, philosopher and humanist. Johann Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Weimar (1530-1573) was a general to King Charles IX of France in the campaign against the Huguenots, which alienated him from his Protestant subjects. Emperor Maximilian II played off Johann Wilhelm against his brothers, leading to the division of the duchy of Saxony in 1572.
