Nota:
Highly amusing and very detailed poetical description of a country-wedding, written in rather an indecent language; A farcical play is inserted. Extensive commentaries and some other prose accompany the poem.
Johannes Buma (Leeuwarden 1694 - Leeuwarden 1756), son of a pharmacist, practised that profession himself for some time, but after his father's death he turned to painting and poetry. De Boere Bruiloft (The Merry Wedding), a satire on various well-known Frisian persons, has a long history: according to the biography that precedes the work, Buma started writing it between the ages of thirty and forty, after which it remained unfinished for sixteen years. At the insistence of friends, he finally completed it. It was only eleven years after his death, when all those involved had died, that the poem was dared to be published to spare the feelings of the dramatis personae still in life.
Beautiful mezzotint portrait of Buma by R. Jelgerhuis after R. Keyert.
note in pencil "de koperen platen zijn nooit verschenen", refers to the Koperen Platen (engraved illustrations) mentioned on the title page, but do not appear in the book.
