Joannes Hauchin was the second Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mechelen. He initiated the publication of the Pastorale Mechliniense, a collection of forms for the various church celebrations, which appeared in Leuven in 1588.
Mathias Hovius was the third Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mechelen and presided over implementing the Catholic Reformation in the Spanish Netherlands. Hovius founded a seminary in Mechelen and enlisted the Jesuits to draft a catechism. This Malines Catechism first appeared in 1607. The 1623 version of this catechetical manual would form the basis for religious instruction in all Belgian dioceses until well into the 20th century.
