Nota:
A monumental work dedicated to the history, writers and monuments of Maffei's city: Verona.
"Verona illustrated reduced in compendium, mainly for the use of foreigners, with various additions"
In the present edition for the use of visitors the first volume contains a biography of Maffei, a history of Verona and a description of the ancient Roman amphitheatre, which is illustrated in six plates. The second volume describes and illustrates in seventeen plates some notable sights of the city and its fortifications, and concludes with a brief survey of its literary history.
The work is dedicated by 'P.M.' [identified by the RIBA cataloguer as Pietro Montanari, the editor] to Alvise Mocenigo II, Podestà di Verona (1628-1709)
Francesco Scipione Maffei was a Venetian writer and art critic, an antiquarian with a humanist education, and author of many articles and plays.
Some plates are signed as made by Dall'Acqua.
Some plates are copied from the 1732 edition, but others are new, e.g. those of the Museo and the Dogana.
