- Johann Christian Sachs was a grammar school rector at the gymnasium in Karlsruhe and a Protestant church councillor in the Margraviate of Baden. Sachs is also known as a historian of the House of Baden - especially for his German version of 'Historia Zaringo-Badensis' by Johann Daniel Schöpflin (1694-1771)
As early as 1754 - before Schöpflin had been commissioned by the Margrave to write a history of the House of Baden - Sachs began to publish lectures at the gymnasium on the origins of the House of Baden and on the lives of individual margraves from the 12th to the 16th centuries. From 1764 to 1773 he published his work in five volumes, which follows the systematics of Schöpflin's 'Historia' and is in parts a translation of this Latin work supplemented by his own annotations. The project was approved by Schöpflin. Sachs also drew on preliminary work by Johannes Gamans, Johann Friedrich Jüngler, Gabriel Förster, Karl Friedrich Drollinger, Friedrich Theobald Sahler and Jakob Friedrich Herbster.
The five volumes this Opus were published between 1764 and 1773 - Permalink:
