- Charles Dibdin (1745-1814) was an English composer, musician, dramatist, novelist, singer and actor. He commenced a new kind of one-man-show, musical variety entertainments, in which he appeared in his own person on the stage seated at a harpsichord and played the accompaniments to his own songs, without attempting any theatrical personification of his characters.
This collection contains 89 songs, mostly on the theme of the sea, many originating from Dibdin's own dramatic entertainments.
