Nota:
A collection of three very popular tales (Le sottilissime astutie di Bertoldo, Le piacevoli et ridicolose simplicità di Bertoldino and Novella di Cacasenno, figliuolo del semplice Bertoldino), the first two written by Giulio Cesare Croce and the last by Adriano Banchieri (under the pseudonym of Camillo Scaliggeri della Fratta), first published in 1620. The tales take up and rework ancient novellas, in particular the medieval 'Disputa di Salomone con Marcolfo'.
Based on this editition : Bertoldo, Bertoldino e Cacasenno, opera buffa by Vincenzo Legrenzio Ciampi to a libretto by Carlo Goldoni, premiered on 26 December 1748 at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice and entered the repertoire of the Académie royale de musique in Paris on 9 November 1753 under the title Bertoldo in corte
Giulio Cesare Croce was an Italian writer, actor/producer of cantastoria and enigma writer. He had an enormous success with his story telling and was able to travel to fairs, markets, patrician houses, and the Italian courts. His presentations were complemented by a violin. His prolific literary production was contingent upon his own transcriptions of his shows.
Portrait engraving on the title page shows Dalla Croce with his violin
illustrated; each of the 20 'Canti' is preceded by a woodcut
