- 'Excess and Avarice', although it appeared as play number 32 in 1714, was one of the first plays Van Halmael wrote. In the preface, he himself calls it "a flower plucked in my youth" dating it thus in the latter half of the 17th century. It contains within it a small opera ('Opera, or singing tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe') composed by Servaes de Koninck (original music lost?) a Flemish baroque composer of motets, Dutch songs, chamber and incidental music, French airs and Italian cantatas. After training and starting his career in Flanders de Koninck moved to Amsterdam, where he was active in circles connected to the Amsterdam Theatre
Interesting frontispiece engraving by Dutch draughtsman, printmaker and publisher Pieter van den Berghe (1659-1737), dated 1711: it depicts a theatrical performance, in addition to the presence of the author's aphorism: Purgat & ornat
included is a list by publisher Hendrik van de Gaete of all 32 stage works by Van Halmael - Permalink:
