- A novena (from Latin: novem, "nine") is an ancient tradition of devotional praying in Christianity, consisting of private or public prayers repeated for nine successive days or weeks. The prayers are often derived from devotional prayer books, or consist of the recitation of the rosary (a "rosary novena"), or of short prayers through the day. Novena prayers are customarily printed in small booklets, and the novena is often dedicated to a specific angel, saint, Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or one of the persons of the Holy Trinity.
As the author Fr. Bernardo de Santa Maria Rosa was preacher and Master of Ceremonies of the Royal Convent of S. Francisco da Cidade do Porto, it could well be that this prayer/songbook was used at the Novenas for the Virgin in the liturgic rituals at the abbey mentioned. The feast day of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception is 8 December.
Engraved Frontispiece, iconography of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception shows her standing, with arms outstretched or hands clasped in prayer. - Permalink:
