Lucelle is a true Romeo & Juliet adaptation by Bredero. A play that moved Maria Tesselschade to tears at the premiere in 1615, a play that was immortalised many times by painters such as Jan Steen and Jan Miense Moleaer, a play that was reprinted more than any of Bredero's plays in the 17th and 18th centuries, a play with the recognisable topical emotion of unattainable love due to a difference in descent.
Final scene of the play painted by Molenaer:https://www.pubhist.com/w7503
Bredero signs the play with 'overgeset en gerijmt' (translated and put in rhymes), pointing herewith at the fact that this tragicomedy was based on a foreing template, namely the ‘tragi-comedie en prose ’ Lucelle (1576) by the French writer Louis Le Jars
