The birth of the conservatory of the Zoccolette took place when, with the approach of the holy year of 1700, Pope Innocent XI thought it advisable to collect all the girls who went around the city begging, because their state of need could be a source of bad temptations and it was better to "preserve the modesty of many maidens who went begging in the public places of Rome." About two hundred were rounded up, and after some temporary accommodations a permanent home was found in 1715 in the Conservatory on today's Via delle Zoccolette. The street's toponym derives precisely from the Conservatory of Ss. Clemente and Crescentino established "for poor orphans, commonly called zoccolette."
