Attack on Marmontel's 'Bélisaire', see 01D28
The controversy caused by Bélisaire led to a condemnation by the Sorbonne's Faculty of Theology in December 1767, and on January 31, 1768, the Archbishop of Paris, Mgr de Beaumont, condemned Bélisaire in a mandement that he had read at the preaching of all the churches in the diocese.
Bélisaire is a banned 1767 French novel on the life of the Byzantine general Belisarius. It popularised the apocryphal tale of his being reduced to beggary by Justinian I despite his great services to the empire, citing it as an example of the ingratitude of those in power towards their faithful servants and indicting the French king Louis XV by proxy as another such ungrateful monarch
bound in with another condemnation of Marmontel's novel
