In the preface, Gottsched writes that he designed this book as a series of Lectionen eight years earlier, and that he would continue to give these lectures every semester (p. xvii) Lectures took place twice a week, we learn on p. xviii, and attendance had grown to sixteen.
Gottsched's intentions are unabashedly classicist: "Ich werde mirs auch allemaal für eine Ehre schätzen, wenn meine Vorschriften mit den Regeln Cicerons und Quintilians, des P. Rapin, des P. Lami und Herrn Rollins ec. ec. übereinstimmen werden." (p. xvii) - Permalink:
